Canada's PGWP Deadline Moved Up: What International Students Need to Know (Now!)

Sirianoverseas

There's been an important update for international students in Canada regarding Post-Graduation Work Permits (PGWPs)! Here's a breakdown of the recent changes announced by IRCC:

  • Changes to PGWP Eligibility: Earlier Deadline: One of the most significant changes is the earlier deadline for PGWP eligibility for graduates of programs delivered through public-private curriculum licensing arrangements. Originally set for September 1, 2024, the deadline has been moved up to May 15, 2024. This means students enrolling in these programs after this date will not be eligible for a PGWP upon graduation.
  • Addressing Housing Concerns: This change is partly motivated by Canada's ongoing housing shortage. The increasing number of international students has placed additional pressure on housing availability. The government hopes these new regulations will help manage this issue.
  • Alternative Work Permit Options:

       1. Don't stress if the new deadline affects your plans! Graduates can still explore other work permit options after graduation, such as those supported by an employer's approved Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) in high-demand fields.

       2. Use the IRCC's designated learning institute list to identify eligible colleges and programs.

  • What's the News for Master's Graduates: There's positive news for Master's students! Previously, the duration of a PGWP depended on the length of the study program. Now, graduates with a Master's degree, regardless of program length (as long as it's at least 8 months), can qualify for a three-year PGWP.
  • Understanding the PGWP:

The PGWP offers international graduates from designated learning institutions (DLIs) the flexibility to work full-time for any employer in Canada. The duration of the permit is determined by the length and intensity of the study program, with a maximum of three years, or the expiry date of the student's passport, whichever comes first.

Stay informed about these updates, and for Master's students, the extended PGWP eligibility. Remember, there are still work permit options available after graduation, so keep exploring your possibilities in Canada!
